Hulu was first thought of as the streaming app you’d hop onto the next day to catch what aired on TV last night. While you can still do that with several shows on Fox and FX, Hulu also has its exclusive titles. As with most streaming services that aim to appeal to the largest audience possible, Hulu serves up a little bit of everything. Such shows include dystopian dramas, historical revisionism, and adult animated comedies beyond The Simpsons and Family Guy (although, yes, both shows are on the service as well). As one of Hulu’s first big hits, The Handmaid’s Tale is a dystopian drama based on the iconic novel by Margaret Atwood. The show takes place in a dark future where declining birthrates have turned the United States into a totalitarian society, where women have had their rights stripped away in the name of procreation. The women meant to serve exclusively as breeders are handmaids dressed in red robes with white brims. June Osborne is one of them and aims to fight back against the society that had separated her from her husband and daughter. The award-winning series has had multiple seasons of intense drama and stars Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Alexis Bledel, Amanda Brugel, and Bradley Whitford.

From Rick & Morty co-creator Justin Roiland comes this eccentric and meta sci-fi animated comedy about aliens living on Earth. Terry, Korvo, Jesse, and Yumyulack have fled their destroyed planet seeking to colonize a new home for their species. While they seem to favor Earth, they are constantly distracted by pop culture and become sidetracked by many absurd projects ever to complete their mission. This leads to wild adventures of parties gone wrong, mutant creatures attacking the suburban setting, and an entire C-plot of humans being held hostage in the walls of the aliens’ home. The series features the same knowing and absurdist humor as Rick & Morty with a voice cast that includes Justin Roiland, Thomas Middleditch, Sean Giambrone, and Mary Mack.

Based on a popular web series, Letterkenny takes in the titular and fictional Canadian rural town. The many residents have their odd quirks, but the oddest is the small farm owned by siblings Wayne and Katy, who mostly spend time hanging out with their best friends Daryl and Squirrely Dan. The four spend their days drinking beer and discussing weird things about life with quick wit. The town itself also becomes a haven for such escapades as debating elections and trying to decide on birthday party themes. The series airs on Crave in Canada but has streamed exclusively on Hulu since 2019, where it has remained a hilarious addition to the lineup for its ten hilarious seasons. The show stars Jared Keeso, Nathan Dales, Michelle Mylett, K. Trevor Wilson, Dylan Playfair, and Andrew Herr.

Spinning off from the film of the same name, What We Do in the Shadows is a mockumentary series that follows the exploits of vampires living in a New York home. The out-of-touch vampires Nandor, Lazlo, Nadia, and Colin reside in the house. While they can only come out at night, their human familiar, Guillermo, tries to maintain the house. But all that might change once he makes a shocking discovery about who he really is and slowly realizes his dreams of becoming a vampire may never come true. The series features hilarious dialogue and even more absurd special effects of vampire antics. The cast includes Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou, Harvey Guillén, and Mark Proksch, with guest cameos by Taika Waititi, Dave Bautista, Tilda Swinton, and Wesley Snipes.

Created by Steven Levitan (Modern Family), Reboot is a sitcom all about rebooting sitcoms. The fictional sitcom Step Right Up gets a reboot series ordered, and the cast of the early 2000s show finds themselves reassembling for the first time in years. It’s a satisfying dose of satire well-suited for the audience who feels burnt out on revivals of old TV shows. He’s also a short-fused boss and awkward dad that keeps failing in some way or another.
